Planning to advertise your business on Facebook and Instagram? Here’s how to think about your ad budget, what affects your costs, and how to decide what you can realistically spend.
Start with what you want to achieve
Your Facebook ads budget should depend on what you’re trying to accomplish. Generating website purchases requires a different budget consideration from collecting leads or promoting a new product.
Before deciding how much to spend, establish what a customer is worth to your business and how much you can afford to spend acquiring one.
Separate your ad budget from management costs
The money you pay Meta to show your ads is different from what you might pay for creative production, campaign management or other marketing support.
If you’re managing campaigns yourself, account for the time required to create ads, test different messages and monitor performance. Your advertising budget is only one part of the investment.
Start with a budget you can learn from
Spending a small amount without a clear testing plan can make it difficult to determine what’s working.
Decide what you want to test, how you’ll measure results and what evidence would justify increasing your spend. Don’t increase your budget simply because an ad is generating clicks. Look at whether those clicks are turning into enquiries, purchases or other meaningful business outcomes.
Know when your budget needs to change
If your campaigns aren’t generating results, spending more isn’t automatically the answer. Your offer, creative, landing page, audience or checkout experience could be the problem.
The goal is to understand what’s limiting performance before committing more money.
